Protomet
Protomet, a corporation located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is a manufacturing, engineering, and technology company serving automotive, military, industrial, scientific, energy, health, food processing, and the marine industry. Protomet's diverse clients range from log cabins to Homeland Security. Because Protomet works in such a diverse set of industries, their engineers are often able to take an idea commonly used in one industry and recommend its application in another.
In 1999, Protomet's big break came when it redesigned a Mercedes seat belt component to save 43% of the cost, over $1.5 million. The company's most recent project involves the redesign of a log home hardware component that lowers the manufacturing cost by 24% and reduces the time and hardware necessary to assemble a log home. This component goes into production in June 2007.
